Robinson Cano hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning to lift the New York Yankees to a dramatic 8-6 victory over the host Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday night.

Cano hit his decisive blast against Dodgers left-hander George Sherrill, who had just entered the game. Cano was 0-for-11 lifetime against Sherrill prior to the winning homer.

New York pushed across four runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game against Dodgers closer Jonathan Broxton, who struggled in a non-save situation.

Cano had an RBI double and Chad Huffman delivered a two-run single before Curtis Granderson tied the game by scoring on Colin Curtis’ infield groundout.

The Yankees’ uprising took away a victory from Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw, who gave up two runs and four hits in seven innings. Kershaw struck out five and walked none.

Mariano Rivera (2-1) got the victory with two shutout innings of relief. Ramon Trancoso (1-2) took the loss.

The Dodgers have lost eight of their last 10 games to fall five games behind the San Diego Padres in the National League West.

Reed Johnson went 3-for-5 and scored twice for Los Angeles. Rafael Furcal reached base four times (two hits, two walks) and had two RBIs.

Ron Belliard homered in the fourth to give the Dodgers a 5-0 lead.

Alex Rodriguez hit a two-run homer in the sixth for the Yankees.

Yankees starter Andy Pettitte gave up five runs – four earned – and six hits in five innings.
