Desmond plated Nyjer Morgan with a one-out single in the bottom of the 13th inning, giving the Washington Nationals an 11-10 walk-off victory over the struggling St. Louis Cardinals.

Roger Bernadina hit a two-run homer and scored twice while Desmond and Willie Harris added two-run singles for the Nationals, who halted a four-game losing streak.

Blake Hawksworth (4-9) began the 13th by hitting Morgan, who advanced to third on a one-out single by Alberto Gonzalez. Desmond, who went 4-for-7 with three RBIs, followed with the winning hit, handing the Cardinals their third straight loss and eighth in 11 games.

Doug Slaten (4-1) walked two in a scoreless top of the 13th to notch the win.

Trailing 8-6, St. Louis rallied for four runs in the ninth to move ahead. Pedro Feliz and Aaron Miles opened the inning with singles against Drew Storen before Brendan Ryan delivered an RBI double. Following a strikeout and an intentional walk to Albert Pujols, Storen hit Matt Holliday with a pitch, forcing in the tying run.

Sean Burnett came in and was greeted by Winn's two-run single, giving the Cardinals a 10-8 lead. Winn also plated a run in the eighth with a base hit.

Closer Ryan Franklin was unable to secure the win for the Cardinals as Gonzalez led off the bottom of the ninth with a single and Bernadina launched his ninth homer of the year two batters later, knotting the game at 10-10.

Pujols led off the fourth inning with his 34th blast of the season, becoming the 47th player to reach the 400-homer plateau and the third-youngest at 30 years, 222 days. Only Alex Rodriguez (29 years, 316 days) and Ken Griffey Jr. (30, 141) were younger when they hit the milestone homer.

Randy Winn collected four hits and three RBIs while Skip Schumaker also drove in three runs for the Cardinals, who fell to 1-3 on their season-high 10-game road trip.

Making his first start since elbow surgery last August, Washington's Jordan Zimmermann yielded five runs and seven hits in four innings, throwing 42 of 70 pitches for strikes.

St. Louis starter Chris Carpenter surrendered six runs - three earned - and 10 hits in six innings. The right-hander, who walked one and struck out one, allowed more than three runs for the first time in nine outings.
