Brewers 6, Reds 3: Yovani Gallardo pitched seven strong innings and added an RBI single as host Milwaukee turned on the power in the sixth and held on for its fifth win in 17 games.

Gallardo (10-8) limited National League Central-leading Cincinnati to one run and six hits as he avenged a loss to counterpart Bronson Arroyo and the Reds on July 21. The 26-year-old Mexican, who walked three and struck out four, helped his own cause in the fifth as he snapped a scoreless tie with a single that plated Martin Maldonado.

The Brewers added to the lead an inning later when Aramis Ramirez and Corey Hart hit back-to-back homers with one out. After Rickie Weeks singled, Maldonado made it 5-0 by depositing an 0-2 offering from Arroyo just over the left-field wall for his sixth blast.

Zack Cozart got Cincinnati on the board in the seventh with a solo shot, and Milwaukee's beleaguered bullpen made things interesting in the eighth. Francisco Rodriguez loaded the bases before giving way to John Axford, who yielded an RBI single by pinch hitter Xavier Paul and a sacrifice fly by Dioner Navarro before getting out of the inning.

Maldonado gave the Brewers a 6-3 advantage in the bottom of the frame with an RBI ground-rule double and Axford worked a perfect ninth for his 18th save in 25 opportunities.

Arroyo (7-7) had his three-game winning streak snapped as he surrendered five runs and 10 hits over 5 1/3 innings. The right-hander struck out five without a walk.

Cozart and Scott Rolen had two hits apiece for the Reds, who have lost back-to-back games for the first time since July 4-5. Cincinnati, which had its nine-game road winning streak halted, saw its division lead over Pittsburgh shrink to 3 1/2 games.

GAME NOTEBOOK: A moment of silence was held prior to the game for the victims of Sunday's mass shooting at a temple in Oak Creek, Wis., which is approximately 13 miles from Miller Park. ... Cincinnati 2B Brandon Phillips was back in the lineup after missing five games with a strained left calf and went 0-for-5. ... After Cesar Izturis was claimed off waivers by Washington, SS Jean Segura was recalled from Double-A Huntsville by Milwaukee and went 0-for-4 in his Brewers debut. Acquired from Los Angeles in the Zack Greinke deal on July 27, Segura made his major-league debut with the Angels three days earlier, going 0-for-3 with two strikeouts.
