Royals 4, Rangers 0 (10): Justin Maxwell belted a walk-off grand slam with two outs in the 10th as host Kansas City took two of three from skidding Texas.

Eric Hosmer opened the 10th with a double off Neal Cotts (5-3) before Billy Butler was intentionally walked and Salvador Perez reached on an infield single against former Royals' closer Joakim Soria. Mike Moustakas fouled out and George Kottaras grounded into a fielder’s choice, but Maxwell hammered a 3-2 offering for his fourth career grand slam.

Tim Collins (3-6) tossed a perfect 10th for the victory, which left the Royals 3 1/2 games behind Cleveland for the final American League wild-card spot. Texas, which fell to 5-15 in September, dropped 1 1/2 games behind the Indians. The loss allowed Oakland to repeat as AL West champion.

Texas starter Alexi Ogando, who permitted two singles and struck out five, did not allow a baserunner past second over a season high-tying seven innings and retired the final 10 batters he faced before departing after 77 pitches. Adrian Beltre and Elvis Andrus finished with two hits each for the Rangers.

Kansas City starter James Shields, who yielded six hits, stranded runners on first and third with two outs in the third in the only real threat he faced in eight frames. Maxwell finished 2-for-4.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Shields was denied in his bid for his 100th career victory. … The Rangers lost for the first time in four starts when Ogando faced the Royals. … Maxwell’s grand slam was his first since Sept. 15, 2010. Three of his four career grand slams have come in September.
