Cardinals 10, Cubs 4: Adam Wainwright struck out eight in seven innings and contributed an RBI single while Matt Adams homered as host St. Louis evened the three-game series with a season-best scoring outburst.

Matt Carpenter (two hits) and Jon Jay drove in two runs apiece while Daniel Descalso (two runs) and Yadier Molina each had two hits and drove in a run for the Cardinals, who batted around in the second and fourth innings. Wainwright (2-1) allowed four runs and seven hits.

Junior Lake homered into the left-field seats on the game's first pitch and Nate Schierholtz and Starlin Castro had two hits and an RBI apiece for Chicago. Carlos Villanueva (1-3) yielded nine runs and 10 hits in three-plus innings, allowing the first five runners to reach in St. Louis' five-run fourth.

The Cardinals took control in the second as they sent nine men to the plate and scored four runs. Adams led off by belting Villanueva's 2-1 offering over the wall in right and after Molina and Allen Craig singled, Jay struck out before Descalso, Wainwright and Carpenter provided consecutive one-out run-scoring singles.

Ten players batted in the fifth when St. Louis blew it open, with Carpenter and Wong contributing RBI hits to start the barrage and Jay capped the onslaught by driving in two runs with a two-out single. The Cubs scored twice in the sixth when Luis Valbuena, Schierholtz and Ryan Sweeney doubled.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Cardinals manager Mike Matheny sat SS Jhonny Peralta, who is off to a 2-for-31 start. ... St. Louis extended the contract of general manager John Mozeliak through 2018. ...
