Tigers 9, Royals 4:
Alex Avila hit his second two-run homer in three days and Justin Verlander had a no-hitter for 5 2/3 innings as visiting Detroit completed a dominating three-game sweep.

Nick Castellanos clubbed a solo homer, Torii Hunter had three hits and three RBIs to extend his hitting streak to 11 games and Miguel Cabrera hit safely in his 10th straight game with a two-run double as the Tigers made it five consecutive wins by outscoring Kansas City 26-8 in the three-game set. Staked to a 7-0 lead, Verlander (4-1) won his fourth consecutive decision, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out seven and walking four.

Jarrod Dyson had a two-run triple and Norichika Aoki drove in a pair of runs for the Royals, whose pitching staff has been knocked around for 33 runs during a season-high four-game losing streak. Jason Vargas (2-1) labored through five innings and was tagged for seven runs on 11 hits.

Rajai Davis was in the middle of three rallies for Detroit, collecting three hits and scoring three runs as the Tigers built a seven-run lead through five innings. After Castellanos opened the scoring with a solo homer in the second, Davis doubled and came home on Hunter's third-inning single before scoring on Cabrera's two-run double in the fourth following Ian Kinsler's RBI single.

Avila, who missed two games in Chicago earlier in the week due to back spasms, cracked a two-run shot in the fifth to make it 7-0. Billy Butler ended Verlander's no-hit bid with a two-out single in the sixth before Dyson ended the shutout with his one-out triple in the seventh.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Verlander halted a four-game losing streak in Kansas City, winning for the first time at Kauffman Stadium since April 2012 to improve to 17-5 lifetime against the Royals. ... Butler doubled and singled and has hit safely in eight of nine games for Kansas City, which opens a seven-game road trip Monday in San Diego. ... DH Victor Martinez extended his hitting streak to seven games for the Tigers, who will go for their sixth straight victory when they open a seven-game homestand against Houston on Monday.
