Pirates 9, Cardinals 1: Russell Martin homered among his three hits and Edinson Volquez tossed a complete game to win his fourth straight start for the first time in his career as visiting Pittsburgh salvaged the finale of the four-game series.

Neil Walker and Josh Harrison each ripped a two-run double for the Pirates, who had mustered just six runs in the initial three contests of the set. Andrew McCutchen also drove in a pair of runs and joined rookie Gregory Polanco by scoring twice in the rout.

Matt Carpenter had a sacrifice fly in the third inning for the Cardinals, who learned that All-Star catcher Yadier Molina will be sidelined 8-12 weeks after suffering a ligament tear in his right thumb. Shelby Miller (7-8) saw his winless skid reach six games after permitting four runs, five hits and four walks in five innings.

McCutchen gave Pittsburgh a 2-1 lead in the fifth by plating Jordy Mercer with a single to right field. The reigning National League Most Valuable Player didn't have long to wait on base as Walker deposited a 1-1 fastball from Miller into right to score both Polanco and McCutchen.

The Pirates broke open the game in the sixth as Harrison plated a pair with a ground-rule double, Polanco scored on a passed ball and McCutchen lifted a sacrifice fly that capped the four-run frame. The offense was more than enough for Volquez (8-6), who allowed one run on six hits to secure his second career complete game - and first since 2012 with San Diego.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Martin, who recorded his 500th career RBI with a single in the first inning, sent a 2-0 fastball from RHP Jason Motte over the wall in left field in the ninth for his fifth homer - and first since June 24. ... Volquez has yielded three runs in 30 innings during his winning streak and held his opponents to fewer than two runs in five of his last six outings. ... Pittsburgh wraps up its seven-game road trip by opening a three-game series versus Cincinnati on Friday, while St. Louis begins a pivotal three-game set at Milwaukee.
