Cardinals 5, Blue Jays 0: Jaime Garcia spun seven scoreless innings as part of the second straight shutout for visiting St. Louis, which took the rubber match of the three-game series.

Matt Carpenter slugged a two-run homer and Jhonny Peralta ripped a solo shot and doubled as part of an 11-hit attack for the Cardinals. Garcia (2-0) followed up Shelby Miller's complete game shutout Saturday by yielding three hits - all singles - and striking out four before two relievers finished it off.

Drew Hutchison (4-4) was no match for Garcia, giving up all five runs in just three frames for his shortest start of the season. Todd Redmond provided five scoreless innings in relief but the Toronto offense - ranked second in the American League entering the day - was stymied for the second straight contest after it had averaged 6.5 runs during a six-game winning streak.

Garcia worked around two walks and a passed ball in the first inning and his teammates broke out for four runs in the second. Peter Bourjos had a sacrifice fly and Tony Cruz an RBI double before Carpenter launched his first home run since April 4 to make it 4-0.

Peralta led off the third with a blast to left for a five-run advantage and Garcia did the rest, getting 15 outs on the ground in a 106-pitch masterpiece. Toronto's best chance came in the fifth, when an infield single, a passed ball and an error put runners on the corners for slugger Jose Bautista, who swung through a 2-2 slider to end the threat.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Cardinals LF Matt Holliday was a late scratch due to lower back tightness. ... Garcia did issue the first three walks of his season after going four starts and 24 2/3 innings without giving up a free pass. ... The Cardinals have a day off before beginning a two-game series at Tampa Bay on Tuesday. Toronto stays home to begin a three-game set against Minnesota on Monday.
