ST. LOUIS -- Chicago White Sox manager Robin Ventura might want to consider bringing a thesaurus to his postgame press conference on days when ace Chris Sale pitches.

"It's hard to keep finding adjectives for him," Ventura said.

Sale's latest splendid performance put him in the record books as he shackled the majors' best team, the St. Louis Cardinals, through eight innings Tuesday night in Chicago's 2-1, 11-inning win at sold-out Busch Stadium.

A sixth-inning strikeout of shortstop Jhonny Peralta gave Sale 10 for the game, marking the eighth straight start in which he fanned 10 or more. He matched the record set by the Boston Red Sox's Pedro Martinez from Aug. 19-Sept. 27, 1999.

While his manager had no problems gushing over his latest dominant outing, Sale was a bit more guarded following a no-decision.

"I don't really pay too much attention to it," he said of the streak. "It's cool, but if you start worrying about it, you won't be talking about it anymore because it will end. Really, it's the least of my worries."

Sale finished with 12 strikeouts, giving him 75 for the month, the most for any pitcher in a month since Nolan Ryan set the modern era record with 87 in June 1977 while toiling for the California Angels.

With Sale on the mound, St. Louis managed just six hits, one walk and one run -- left fielder Randal Grichuk's 448-foot solo homer in the fourth. Sale's 96 mph fastball and sweeping breaking ball simply overmatched the Cardinals (51-25).

First baseman Xavier Scruggs, who whiffed twice and flied out in his three at-bats against Sale, said deception plays a role in the lefty's success.

"Haven't seen too many pitchers like that," Scruggs said. "He had his stuff, and he was on. The fact is, he throws hard."

Sale even got to make a contribution with the bat, looping a broken-bat single in the third for his first major league hit. He scored Chicago's first run on first baseman Jose Abreu's bouncing single that struck second base and caromed into left-center field.

At one point, Sale pointed to his uniform, dirty from a slide into second base, and grinned widely.

"Running around the bases, hitting, sliding ... that was fun," he said. "But I highly doubt I'll pinch-hit any time soon."

The only thing Sale didn't pick up was the win. That went to reliever Daniel Webb (1-0), who got the last two outs of the 10th before Chicago catcher Tyler Flowers jacked a 431-foot homer off Miguel Socolovich (2-1) with two outs in the 11th.

Closer David Robertson worked around a pair of two-out singles in the 11th, retiring Scruggs on a grounder to third for his 16th save.

The White Sox (33-42) won for just the fifth time in 18 games while improving to 7-2 in extra innings.

It was just the eighth loss in 37 home games for St. Louis, which wasted a solid effort by starter Lance Lynn. He gave up a run on six hits and a walk in six innings, and he struck out six.

However, the Cardinals, like most teams, simply couldn't find the formula for making contact with the electric Sale.

"He's being mentioned with some of the greatest pitchers who have ever played the game," Ventura said. "He's great. He's fun to watch."

NOTES: St. Louis put RHP Matt Belisle (right elbow inflammation) on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 26. Belisle is 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA in 30 outings out of the bullpen. ... To replace Belisle, the Cardinals recalled RHP Marcus Hatley from Triple-A Memphis. In order to add Hatley to the 40-man roster, they shifted RHP Jordan Walden (right biceps) from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL. ... Chicago has been outscored 62-21 in the first inning, the worst margin of any major league team.
