Southern Methodist 87, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 61: Yanick Moreira scored a career-high 19 points on 6-of-6 shooting as the host Mustangs pulled away from the Golden Lions in the opening round of the Corpus Christi Challenge.
Cannen Cunningham added 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting for Southern Methodist (4-1), which shot 66.7 percent from the field and 80.6 percent from inside the arc. Markus Kennedy and Nic Moore chipped in 12 and 10 points, respectively.
DaVon Haynes paced Arkansas-Pine Bluff (2-3) with 18 points and five assists. Daniel Broughton scored 13, Ghiavonni Robinson had 12 and Tevin Hammond 10 for the Golden Lions, who were outrebounded 38-16.
After 13 minutes of even play, Southern Methodist closed the first half on a 17-7 run to take a 41-31 cushion into halftime. Two Robinson 3-pointers pulled Arkansas-Pine Bluff within four less than a minute into the second half, but Moreira's dunk and layup pushed the Mustangs' lead back to 53-42 with 13:33 to play.
Hammond's three-point play one minute later cut the Golden Lions' deficit to six, but seven straight Cunningham points sparked a 15-0 stretch as Southern Methodist pulled away. The Mustangs scored 34 of the last 48 points.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Arkansas-Pine Bluff shot 39.3 percent from the field. Southern Methodist has held 10 of its previous 14 opponents to less than 40 percent. … Haynes (four) was the only Golden Lions player to grab more than two rebounds. … The Mustangs overcame just 3-of-12 shooting from long range and 19 turnovers.
