Schaefer made 6-of-9 from the floor and nailed three 3-pointers and Tim Kempton notched 16 points and 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season for Lehigh (1-4), which defeated a Big East team for the first time since 2008. Austin Price had 14 points and Justin Goldsborough and Miles Simelton had 10 and nine points, respectively, for the Mountain Hawks.
Myke Henry poured in 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead DePaul (2-1), which was in search of its first 3-0 start under Oliver Purnell. Billy Garrett Jr. added 15 points, Jamee Crockett had 13 and Tommy Hamilton IV chipped in with 12 and six rebounds for the Blue Demons.
Henry single-handedly kept DePaul in the game in the first half, going 6-of-9 from the field and scoring 15 points as the rest of the Blue Demons scored the same amount on 4-of-24 shooting. A 3-pointer by Schaefer staked Lehigh to a 19-7 lead with 11:24 left and the senior would go on to hit two more treys before Lehigh went to the break with a 41-30 advantage.
The Blue Demons tried to cut into the lead in the second half, once getting to within nine points on a 3-pointer by Crockett, but each time the Mountain Hawks had an answer. Goldsborough dunked to make it a 15-point spread with 8:37 remaining and DePaul got no closer than seven points the rest of the way in suffering its first defeat.
