Corey Davis Jr. tied a career high with 26 points Sunday as No. 9 Houston opened the second half with a 39-10 blitz and routed Tulane 85-50 in an American Athletic Conference mismatch at New Orleans.
Davis went 8 of 11 from the 3-point line for the Cougars (25-1, 12-1 American), who sank 17 of 35 attempts from behind the 3-point arc, including 9 of their first 11 in the second half. Armoni Brooks scored 24, sinking 6 of 8 treys.
Caleb Daniels paced the Green Wave (4-20, 0-12), who have lost 14 consecutive games, with 13 points. Samir Sehic was good for 12, but it wasn't close to being enough. Tulane converted only 32.1 percent from the field and allowed a whopping 26 fast-break points while scoring just two.
Davis hinted at an explosive day when he got Houston out to a 22-5 lead in the first 10:10, drilling three 3-pointers and scoring 11 points. But Davis missed his last five shots and the Green Wave gained some traction, actually chopping the deficit to 37-28 at the half on the strength of a 3-pointer by Jordan Cornish with 36.5 seconds left.
Moses Wood's dunk 2 1/2 minutes into the second half drew Tulane within 41-33, but the game's competitive phase ended shortly thereafter. The Cougars ripped off the next 17 points, doing most of their damage from the 3-point line.
Davis sandwiched two long balls around a Brooks 3-pointer. Chris Harris added a stickback, followed by 3-balls from Davis and Cedrick Alley Jr. for a 58-33 advantage with 12:56 left.
It got no better from there for the Green Wave. Brooks and Davis continued to hit 3-pointers, while the Houston defense kept shutting down a punchless opponent. Brooks' corner 3-pointer off an assist from DeJon Jarreau upped the margin to 74-38 with 7:58 left, and fresh faces filled the floor for the game's remainder.
The Cougars owned the glass to the tune of 49-30 and drew 20 assists on 32 made field goals.
