Forward Christian Mekowulu had 19 points and 12 rebounds while guard Savion Flagg scored 22 and also had 12 boards to lead Texas A&M to a 64-57 victory over Vanderbilt at Reed Arena in College Station, Texas, on Saturday night.
Forwards Simi Shittu (11 points, 10 rebounds) and Yanni Wetzell (15 points) led the Commodores (9-20, 0-16 Southeastern Conference).
Vanderbilt played much of the day without its best 3-point shooter, guard Aaron Nesmith, who was on the bench with foul trouble. The freshman picked up his fourth foul with 14:49 left. The Commodores had a string of 17 consecutive missed 3-point attempts and shot 16.7 percent on 30 attempts for the day.
A&M (13-15, 6-10) trailed until Mekowulu took the game over early in the second half.
The Aggies tied the score for the first time since the opening tip on Mekowulu's tip-in with 18:25 to play. Texas A&M took its first lead 29 seconds later at 32-31 on Flagg's 3-pointer and never trailed again.
Texas A&M's lead stood at 46-37 on a dunk from forward Josh Nebo with 10:49 left. Vanderbilt got back within one at 56-55, but Flagg's put-back with 1:26 left put A&M up five and proved to be the dagger.
The Commodores took an 11-0 lead before A&M took a time out with 16:36 remaining in the first half.
The Aggies slowed Vanderbilt with a full-court press and better half-court defense. The Commodores had a field goal drought that lasted 8:41 until Shittu's layup with 4:08 left in the period that made the score 24-21 in favor of the Commodores.
A&M cut the lead to one, but Shittu scored the Commodores' last five points to help them to a 29-25 halftime lead.
Both teams were down a starter. Aggies guard T.J. Starks and Vanderbilt forward Matt Ryan each sat out with injuries.
Vanderbilt extended its school-record losing streak to 17 games. Vanderbilt has two games left to avoid becoming the SEC's first team to go winless in conference play since Georgia Tech in 1954.
The Aggies honored senior Admon Gilder, who has missed most of the year with a blood clot, on Senior Night, along with Mekowulu and guards Chris Collins and Frank Byers.
