Mamadi Diakite scored a career-high 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as No. 11 Virginia ran away from James Madison in the second half for a 65-34 victory Sunday night in Charlottesville, Va.
The defending national champion Cavaliers (2-0) won their 23rd straight home opener and improved to 11-0 all-time against the Dukes (1-1). Virginia is 74-6 at home in nonconference games under head coach Tony Bennett.
Braxton Key also had a double-double for the Cavaliers with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Jay Huff added 11 points. Matt Lewis led the Dukes with 14 points, and Zach Jacobs added nine.
After also limiting Syracuse to 34 points in a season-opening road win Wednesday, Virginia held its in-state neighbor to 11 points in the second half. James Madison finished the night with more turnovers (19) than made field goals (12) and shot just 22.6 percent.
Virginia is now 89-2 when holding opponents under 50 points during the Bennett era, including 25-0 when keeping them under 40.
The Cavaliers established control with a 20-3 run to open the second half, stretching the lead to 51-26 with 11:55 remaining. Key scored the first seven points of the half with a layup, a 3-pointer and two free throws.
A 3-pointer by Jacobs with 11:46 left finally ended a 6:12 scoring drought for the Dukes, but it was far too little, too late.
James Madison committed 12 turnovers in the first half and trailed 31-23 at the break.
Lewis did his best to keep James Madison in the contest. The junior guard scored 11 in the opening half and gave the Dukes their first lead at 15-14 with his third 3-pointer at the 8:17 mark.
Diakite countered with 16 first-half points, including a 3-pointer -- just his ninth in 106 career games -- and three dunks. Two of the senior forward's slams came during a 15-3 surge that gave Virginia its first double-digit lead at 31-20.
The Cavaliers return to action Saturday at home against Columbia, while the Dukes will host Shenandoah on Wednesday night.
