Derryck Thornton scored 19 points on 9-for-12 shooting, and Boston College held on for a 73-72 win over Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon at South Bend, Ind.
Jay Heath finished with 16 points for the Golden Eagles, and Steffon Mitchell contributed at both ends of the court with seven points and 11 rebounds. Boston College (5-5, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) snapped a four-game losing streak and notched its first win since Nov. 20.
T.J. Gibbs scored 22 points to lead Notre Dame (6-3, 0-2), which lost its second game in a row after a 72-51 drubbing by No. 3 Maryland on Wednesday. John Mooney had a double-double with 16 points and 18 rebounds.
Notre Dame pulled within 70-67 with 1:08 to go on a layup by Juwan Durham. That capped an 8-0 run for the Fighting Irish and set up a tight finish.
A 3-pointer by Heath pushed the Golden Eagles' lead back to 73-67, but Notre Dame rallied to pull within 73-72 in the closing seconds.
The Fighting Irish fell behind by as many as 13 points early in the second half but cut the deficit to six on a 3-pointer by Gibbs with 12:30 remaining.
The Golden Eagles quickly regrouped after a timeout to reel off five straight points on a jump shot by Thornton and a 3-pointer by C.J. Felder. That bumped the lead back to double digits at 59-48 with 9:51 to play.
Boston College led 38-28 at the half.
The Golden Eagles led by as many as 12 points before the break and never trailed. Heath and Thornton had 11 points apiece in the first half and combined to shoot 4-for-4 from beyond the arc.
A 3-pointer by Nate Laszewski pulled Notre Dame within 11-10 with 13:35 to go in the first half. Boston College then went on a 12-3 run to establish a double-digit advantage.
Heath hit a pair of 3-pointers during the run, which included layups by Mitchell and Thornton, as well as a pair of free throws by Mitchell.
