T.J. Gibbs poured in 23 points, and Notre Dame connected on a couple of key 3-point shots down the stretch in a 90-80 victory against Wake Forest on Wednesday night in South Bend, Ind.
John Mooney's 19 points and 13 rebounds were huge for Notre Dame (12-8, 3-6 Atlantic Coast Conference), which snapped a two-game losing streak. Reserves Nate Laszewski and Dane Goodwin notched 18 and 14 points, respectively.
Wake Forest scoring leader Brandon Childress, who missed Sunday's overtime loss to Virginia with an injury, racked up 24 points Wednesday, aided by 9-of-10 shooting on free throws. He was 7-for-14 from the field.
Olivier Sarr added 18 points and Isaiah Mucius had 13 points for the Demon Deacons (9-11, 2-8), who have lost three games in a row. The first two defeats in the current stretch came by a combined five points.
Notre Dame shot 10-for-26 on 3-point attempts while Wake Forest was 5-for-14 from long range in the first of the teams' two scheduled meetings this season.
Notre Dame built a 12-point lead as Wake Forest went almost five minutes with only one field goal during the mid-section of the second half.
The Demon Deacons were within 74-68 with 5:23 to play, but Gibbs responded with a 3-pointer. The gap was down to 77-74 when Mucius sank a layup with 3:41 to go.
The Irish, who were charged with only seven turnovers, finished 22-for-25 on free throws. They posted their final eight points on foul shots.
Notre Dame overcame a rough shooting night from Prentiss Hubb, who was 1-for-11 from the field and ended up with five points.
Wake Forest led 41-36 at halftime. The tone changed in a hurry when the Irish opened the second half on a 13-4 run across the first 4 1/2 minutes.
By game's end, other than Childress and Sarr, the remaining three Wake Forest starters combined for only 15 points.
The Demon Deacons were unable to repeat their 2019 victory at Notre Dame.
