An 8-0 run by Rutgers led to a 47-47 tie when Ron Harper Jr. hit a turnaround jumper with 4:06 left.
Maryland went 11:40 without a field goal before Donta Scott scored in transition with 17:41 to play to trigger a 14-4 Terrapins second-half run. When Smith blocked a shot and hit a 3-pointer at the other end, Maryland had regained the lead (31-29) with 14:48 remaining.
The Terrapins jumped out to a 14-6 lead early, hitting four of their first seven 3-point attempts. Rutgers went on a 19-4 tear and held the Terrapins scoreless for nearly eight minutes. The Scarlet Knights took the lead on Yeboah's trey at 9:03 and hung on for a 25-20 halftime advantage.
Maryland had just two Cowan free throws over the final 9:20 of the first half against Rutgers' stingy defense, which entered allowing only 38 percent shooting and 61.1 points per game.
The Scarlet Knights lost their eighth straight game to Maryland since both programs joined the Big Ten in 2014.
After two straight home games, Maryland goes on the road Friday at Big Ten-leading and No. 20 Illinois. Rutgers hosts Northwestern on Sunday.
