Obi Toppin scored 23 points and Rodney Chatman added 14 to lead the No. 4 Dayton Flyers to an 82-67 win over the Davidson Wildcats on Friday in Dayton.
Toppin went 10-for-11 from the field, grabbed 12 rebounds and ignited the home crowd in the second half with back-to-back highlight reel dunks as the Flyers (27-2, 16-0) won their 18th straight game while earning the regular-season Atlantic 10 title.
Ibi Watson contributed 13 points, marking the first time in nine games the Michigan transfer reached double figures. Jalen Crutcher recorded 10 points and seven assists and Trey Landers scored 11 points and pulled down seven rebounds.
Kellan Grady led the Wildcats (15-13, 9-7) with 23 points. After being held to three points in the first 20 minutes, Jon Axel Gudmundsson finished with 20 points. Hyunjung Lee chipped in with 13 points.
With Davidson holding an early 5-3, Chatman's 3-pointer put the Flyers in the lead for good. Toppin and Ryan Mikesell followed with a pair of buckets to put Dayton up 10-5.
Grady's 3 pulled the Wildcats to within two at 10-8, but that's as close Davidson would get the rest of the game.
Dayton's offense started to hum with a Landers dunk, followed by Watson's jumper. The lead grew to nine on Toppin's 3 from the top of the key.
Toppin's 3-pointer gave Dayton its largest lead of the first half at 40-21 at the 2:09 mark.
The Flyers shot 69 percent from the field as they opened up a 42-24 lead heading into intermission. For the game, Dayton shot 72.3 percent from field (34-for-47).
Dayton controlled the paint, outrebounding Davidson in the first half 20-6 and outscoring the Wildcats, 22-8.
The Flyers came out of the break and built their lead to 24 on a traditional three-point play by Watson that made the score 61-37.
Davidson made one last charge and trailed by just 12 after Gudmundsson's layup and free throw. Toppin answered with a 3 to doom any chance the Wildcats had of coming all the way back.
