Nahiem Alleyne and Jalen Cone each scored 18 points and combined for 10 of Virginia Tech's 20 3-pointers Saturday as the Hokies shrugged off a recent shooting slump to rout Coppin State, 97-57, in Blacksburg, Va.
Virginia Tech (6-1) missed its first six 3-point attempts, then converted 15 of its next 21 attempts as it blew out its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opponent for the second straight year. The Hokies canned 51.7 percent of their field goals and cashed in 18 Eagles' turnovers for 30 points.
Keve Aluma had 12 points for the Hokies and Hunter Cattoor added 11 off the bench as Virginia Tech finished 20 of 37 on 3-pointers and had eight different players connect from distance. The Hokies also had 20 assists on 30 made baskets and had a 43-29 rebounding advantage.
Anthony Tarke scored 19 points and had four steals for Coppin State, while Isaiah Gross chipped in 12 points. The Eagles shot 36.4 percent (20 of 55) from the field and 19.2 percent (5 of 26) from 3-point range.
Coppin State stayed competitive for most of the first half as Virginia Tech continued the shooting woes that held them to an average of 61.7 points over previous three games. The Eagles led 5-4 at the first TV timeout, nearly four and a half minutes into the game.
It was 9-8 Coppin State eight minutes into the half when the Hokies got going. Aluma started it with a basket inside and a 3-pointer. Alleyne, Cattoor and Cone added 3-pointers, although the lead was just 22-17 with 7:11 remaining in the first half.
Virginia Tech pulled away from there as Cattoor and Justyn Mutts made consecutive 3-pointers to put the Hokies ahead by double figures for the first time at 28-17. That was part of a 17-5 run to end the half and give Virginia Tech a 39-22 advantage.
It got far worse for Coppin State in the second half as Virginia Tech shot 60.7 percent (17 of 28) from the field after the break and 66.7 percent (12 of 18) from 3-point range. The Hokies led by as many as 49 down the stretch.
