Julian Champagnie collected 24 points and 10 rebounds as surging St. John's pushed its winning streak to six games with a 92-81 victory over host Providence on Saturday afternoon.
St. John's (13-7, 7-6 Big East) picked up a fifth straight conference win and won its fourth straight conference road game.
Champagnie tallied 19 points in the first half when the Red Storm scored 19 consecutive points, led by 17 and held an eight-point lead at halftime. He shot 9 of 18 from the floor and posted his sixth double-double of the season.
Posh Alexander added a career-high 21 points and Rasheem Dunn contributed 13 and 10 assists as the Red Storm shot a season-best 58.6 percent.
The Friars (9-10, 5-8) took their third straight loss and fell to 2-7 in their last nine games.
Nate Watson led the Friars with a career-high 30 points, including 12 when Providence rallied from its 17-point deficit in the final 10-plus minutes of the first half. Noah Horchler added 19 and A.J. Reeves finished with 13, but David Duke was held to nine, marking his third straight game in single digits.
After Providence took a 14-12 lead on a layup by Alyn Breed with 15:35 left, Champagnie scored eight of the next 11 points and St. John's ripped off a 19-0 run to get a 31-14 lead on a 3-pointer by Greg Williams Jr. with 10:57 remaining.
Watson scored 12 points over the next six-plus minutes, and another layup cut the deficit to 43-36 with four minutes left. Providence was within 49-41 at intermission.
Providence scored the first nine points of the second half and regained the lead at 50-49 on two free throws by Reeves with 17:59 remaining.
Watson's layup made it 56-51 nearly two minutes later but St. John's rebounded by forcing seven turnovers in a 20-3 run and took a 71-59 lead on a Dunn's free throws with 8:10 left.
Providence cut the deficit to 83-76 on a 3-pointer by Reeves with 3:05 remaining but could not draw closer as St. John's sank five free throws the rest of the way.
