Chris Kreider scored a tiebreaking short-handed goal with 8:06 remaining as the host New York Rangers rallied again in the third period for a 3-2 victory over the Boston Bruins on Wednesday night.

The Rangers won for the third time this season when trailing after 40 minutes and for the second time in as many games thanks to a savvy defensive play during a holding penalty to Matt Rempe.

Boston's Morgan Geekie lost the puck to defenseman Adam Fox in the slot near the New York net. Fox moved the puck to Mika Zibanejad to spring a 2-on-1 and Kreider finished it with a shot from the lower edge of the left circle that went into the slightly vacated left side of the net.

It was Kreider's third short-handed goal of the season, and it helped the Rangers improve to 9-3-3 in their past 15 games.

Vincent Trocheck started the comeback early in the third with a tip-in right after a penalty to the Bruins' Brad Marchand expired to tie the game at 2.

Artemi Panarin also scored in the second and Zibanejad had two assists.

New York goalie Igor Shesterkin made 15 saves and stopped Charlie McAvoy and Marchand right before Kreider scored. Shesterkin also protected the lead with a point-blank stop on Mason Lohrei with about 2 1/2 minutes left.

David Pastrnak scored his 11th goal during a 12-game points streak and Elias Lindholm tallied 16 seconds later for the Bruins, who lost for the first time in regulation (16-1-4) when taking a lead into the third.

Boston goalie Joonas Korpisalo stopped 19 shots.

After an uneventful opening period, Panarin made it 1-0 for New York 6:07 into the second when he one-timed Zibanejad's centering pass over Korpisalo's stick following a turnover by Boston's Brandon Carlo.

Pastrnak tied it with 4:57 left when his shot from the lower edge of the right circle fluttered by New York defenseman Will Borgen and by Shesterkin. Lindholm made it 2-1 for Boston when he got the puck from Marchand and sent a shot from slightly above the right circle through Fox's legs and into the net.

New York tied it with 14:33 remaining when Trocheck parked himself at the right doorstep for a tip-in of K'Andre Miller's shot.
